Hey hey, y’all! I’m Courtney, a freelance journalist-turned-blogger, wife and young mom. I live just outside Atlanta, where I’m actively involved in the natural hair scene. I started Natruly Courtney as a platform to answer frequently asked questions about my own hair, and as a place to share my love of all things artsy, nerdy and creative. It has since grown into a community where I celebrate sisterhood and muse on a number of topics including health, beauty, travel and family.
My Hair
As a freshman at Georgia State University, I learned to somewhat care for my relaxed hair out of necessity. Then, while walking to a class one day, I noticed a beautiful natural. At that moment it dawned on me that I had always admired textured hair, and that I someday wanted to flaunt my own textured mane. “Why not now?” I asked.
So, for a few months in the fall of 2007, I forayed into transitioning. I became frustrated after taking out a set of micro braids and reverted back to the relaxer. Then, in October 2008, I decided to kick the Just For Me for good and did the big chop eight months later. I’ve been completely natural (and happy!) since June 19, 2009.
My Passion
I’ve been writing and drawing since I could hold a pen, so writing and designing are of course integral parts of my life.
Aside from my journalism experience in writing, designing and editing for print, I am interested in website and stationery design, and online journalism. I enjoy reading, researching and finding examples of natural beauty and health in various forms of media including videos, blogs, television and theater.
